Cartoon Commentaries

Pol cartoon - Bennett - 911 Hero.jpg (58075 bytes)

This cartoon is related to the events we studied in the 1920's unit because the teenagers at that time rejected the "traditional" heros and idols for new ones like celebrities and sports stars. But as pictured in this cartoon, it is the famous baseball players that are excited about meeting a "traditional" hero; a firefighter.

This cartoon is representing events in WWI because it shows that the government has more power than the common citizens. As shown, the citizens have no say in anything.. The citizens home is being destroyed  represents their constitutional rights being taken away) while their home is being taken apart without there liking (gain of government power). The cartoon doesn't represent the exact same problem but it does represent a struggle in power.

I featured this essay on the Apollo 7 space flight because the US had just gone to war with Iraq, and it seemed that the political cartoons I kept seeing criticized the president for these actions.  Right or wrong, I believe that we must now turn to supporting one another as the war is going ahead.  The space flight essay and picture were a comfortable distraction.  While giving us something interesting to look at, it also reminds us that we aspire to be a world where peace can reign, and war is no longer necessary.  Perhaps one day this may yet happen.  You may read the article by clicking here.

What I think this political cartoon means is how the war is really a crazy thing to do.  With war protests world wide and going against giving the U.N. the needed time to complete the weapons inspections in Iraq it is a crazy move by our president.   I also find this cartoon ironic because it has the news stand with the news papers talking about MARCH MADNESS and then the next news stand says "JUST PLAIN MADNESS," meaning how George Bush is ignoring the UN.

I think the cartoon mean that Russia, Germany, France and the other plane is trying to stop the U.S from going to war.

Pol cartoon - Bennett - sword_in_stone.jpg (45837 bytes)

To decipher this cartoon, I had to use my knowledge of the book, The Sword in the Stone. In that book, to get power over the kingdom, you had to pull the sword from the stone. Bush wants power over the UN so that he will have no one to stop him from going to war with Iraq. This cartoon also mean that as powerful as Bush is, he still does not have enough of that power to control the UN. Bush will use methods other than the normal to gain control. Bush may want to be king of all the land, but he is still only going to be a knight in his own yard.

Pol cartoon - Bennett - Valentines Day.jpg (28624 bytes)

The Political cartoon means that today we care more about stocking up supplies in case of war than having a normal Valentines Day. The box had things the news said we should stock up on like duct tape and canned foods.  It is a funny way of saying that today if we care about someone we get them canned foods instead of candy and flowers. The cartoons show how much we have changed as a country because of 9/11. It shows we are so worried about war that we forget about holidays and leisure time.
